With fury born of grief and frustration, the men in the garage tear into the zombies with all of thier might. Abe swings specifically for the head, ending their unlives with great, pulpy "thwack"s. Alex, meanwhile, seems to match the zombies' ferocity with his own. In a few seconds that feel like days, the garage floor is littered with zombie corpses and the men stand over them in the sudden silence, panting and looking at one another.
Afterward, everyone seems strangely energized, as if this victory marked a turning point for them. As if there was hope.

Abe
Carefully wiping off my ax I check surreptitiously for scratches or bite marks on myself wondering if I could do to me what I,I,I...........no I can't even think about it. I look out the hole looking for my signs of the undead predators and if I see or hear none I go back and open up the rear doors of the truck and start loading anything that might possibly be useful on the road. Tool boxes, Jacks, fire extinguishers, cans of oil, wire, chains, gas cans if they are full, windshield solvent, antii-freeze, I tie gas line hoses and fan belts together and hang them on the side to equipment hooks. I don't know how much time we have but I make an effort to pack it in the storage hold as neatly as I can because I know if we need it we will need it fast.
The scientist in me insists on storing things as neatly and by category as I am able. With the truck loaded only then do I think about my companions and look for the med kit and ask if anybody needs wounds tended to.
) Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

As Abe gathers supplies, Alex works with the other men to repair the fire engine. Sizzling sparks, clanking metal and weary grunts of exertion punctuate the constant low groaning of the hungry dead outside. Finally, as the sun begins to set once again, the engine roars to life! Cheers break out amongst the collected survivors, though Dave, the real estate guy, seems slightly less enthusiastic. Stew, they guy from Texas, asks him if he's OK, but Dave just gives a little laugh and says that it's been a long day. Stew gives him an overly-enthusiastic slap on the back before hopping into the driver's seat and turning on the sirens. "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE...."
"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!", Mary screams in terror as the zombie tears out the little man's throat. She shields the little girl's eyes from the grisly sight while the other two men take to the zombie with a crowbar and a large, ornamental cross. Terrified and exhausted, the three huddle together at the back of the church while the man with the cross makes his way up into the bell tower. At the top, he looks out over the town but sees only destructions. Several columns of dark smoke rise from uncontrolled fires here and there, and he can barely make out the slow swagger of the dead as they crowd around buildings or wander aimlessly in the streets. Then he sees it. A military helicopter descends to land at a point lost in the smoke. That must be the high school pick-up point! Behind him, in the growing shadows, a figure stirs. The frock and collar of a priest do nothing to make its dead eyes any less frightening. Unseen and unheard, it moves toward the man in the tower...

From outside, in the dimming light, the spinning flashers from the fire engine can be seen through the windows of the garage's bay doors and the siren sound mutedly through the walls. A few undead claw feebly at the paneling and several more mill about aimlessly in the foreground.
Suddenly, the garage door explodes in a hail of wood and glass as the fire engine leaps forward through the whirling debris! Zombies are flung aside or crushed beneath the wheels of the huge vehicle. Tires squealing, the truck leans hard as it turns sharply up the street towards the high school and salvation. As the engine tears down the street, zombies fling themselves at the vehicle, only to be violently rebuffed. Soon, fat, oily drops of rain begin to fall, and the sound of thunder can barely be heard over the sirens. In the distance, a bolt of lightning silhouettes the steeple of a church in the distance, and the zombies seem to redouble their efforts in reaction to the elemental display.

The fire engine speeds down the rainy streets weaving around abandoned vehicles and mowing down unfortunate zombies. The unnaturally loud thunder punctuates the howl of the siren and the flashes of lightning reveal the survivor's progress through the decimated town. Outside, at the back of the truck, Alex hacks through pouring rain at hangers-on, sending gore and severed limbs to float in the rapidly filling gutters of the darkened streets.
Up front, Dave isn't looking well. He begins shivering violently, as Abe looks on with concern. But before Abe can decide what to do about it, he looks up to see that engine is speeding toward a roadblock of abandoned cars!
