    Human Fighter or Kobold Rougue?

    Warning: I'm a n00b player. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum... Hopefully my first session will turn out swell. ^_^;

    My DM (a Catholic priest, lol) is setting up a 4e based campaign. And he said I could either be a fighter or rogue with all the people that's in the party right now. Soooo, being the dreaded creative player who likes to see how both options would look, I made two character sheets, and I have to choose between them before the first session starts. Being new to gaming D&D, I've looked up everything there is the internet and my DM's collection of D&D books has to offer. I left some things out that I felt were unnecessary (initiative, minor actions like dropping things, etc.)

    ... What I rolled for the kobold scared me. o_o;

    If you are new I would go with the fighter, he is going to be a lot stronger and a lot better quicker and easier to figure out until you have a few campaigns under your belt.  I like rogues for a second choice because they can just flat out be a lot of fun to role play, no wrong choice here.

    Re: Human Fighter or Kobold Rougue?

    I'm going to disagree here.  With 4e, the Fighter is no longer the "easy mode" character.  He's got plenty of options, and a very important, group-centric role.  That said, I would suggest playing the Rogue.  You already like Rogues and you rolled well (he let you roll stats?!).  Also, while the Rogue's role is important, it's somewhat "easier" on a new player because it's more intuitive.  You go in, you hit stuff hard, you get away.  Maybe you need to coordinate who you hit with the rest of the group, buy it's pretty obvious what to do.

    On the other hand, playing a Fighter, sure, you dish out damage, but that's not you "job".  Your "job" is to protect the threatened members of the party.  It can be easy to lose focus on that when you're chopping guys in half with your scythe, and before you know it, the Wizard is surrounded and the Cleric is down.  You've got to consider who needs you most, which monster is the biggest threat, where you need to be for best performance, etc.  It's not "hard" to do, really, and I'm sure your party-members will offer suggestions, but it's a more "team" oriented class than the Rogue or the Wizard, IMO.

    Plus, you know, Rogues are just cool. Ethan Wink

    I keep forgetting the game has changed, old dinosaur habits die hard.

    Re: Human Fighter or Kobold Rougue?

    @Old Grump:
    Aww, that's not such a bad thing! The last campaign the minister had going was 3.5... so, if I were in the picture earlier, I guess I would've been a fighter. If I find a group in the future who would rather play the earlier versions over the new one, you'll know that your advice came in handy. Thank you!

    @Artmonkey:
    Oh, yes. He let me roll... I thought that's what DM's usually had their players do. We did 4d6, best of 3... Was that strange of him to do? Anyways, thanks, rogue it is! Ethan Smile

    I can't wait to play. I'm so excited! First session is this Friday!

    Awesome, you'll have to tell us how it goes.  Shifty is pretty cool, especially for rogues.
