    Re: Inconvenient Death

I'm going to slam the top of the cabin with the back of my axe to give them a heads up (Sorry, I'm kinda busy with uni ... did I tie myself on or should I be looking for some nice soft garbage to bail into?)

I blurt out, "God Help Us!  Dave brace yourself!", and stuffing the axe between the seats I brace with both my feet and hands for the impending crash. I pray the truck is heavy enough to break through the barrier but the uneven light makes the extent of the barricade hard to judge.  Selfishly I'm relieved that I hadn't decided to ride on the back with Alex considering the ride we are getting.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

OOCOk, we'll make this one quick.  This is a "hope" scene, which gives you guys a whopping 2 dice vs. a difficulty of Hard (2 Odds).  I don't see any way of changing that, so here we go.

    4, 1, reroll: 5 - {2 Odds}

Oh my!  There is "hope" for you after all. Smile (Yes, but...)

With an amazing crash, the fire engine blasts through the abandoned cars, but the impact is significant, and everyone inside is thrown around violently and Abe loses control.

Alex doesn't remember what happened, exactly, but he wakes on the ground several yards from the fire truck, seemingly uninjured.  Behind him, the scattered cars burn low beneath the torrent of rain.  Looking up from the puddle in which he lays, he can see the steeple of the church right in front of him as it stretches into the stormy sky.  From inside the building comes a frightened shriek.  It's Mary!

Abe and the others come to in the truck, dazed but uninjured, except for Dave, who remains alive but unconscious in the other seat.  Abe checks the ignition, and the engine roars back to life.  Apparently the crash wasn't that bad.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

OOCOkay, I thought I was in the passenger seat and one of the mechanical types was driving but at least that explains the erratic driving.
Making a quick check for a pulse I grab my axe and leap to the ground and run back to check on Alex.  Seeing him moving I change directions and run to the front door of the church, axe at the ready, I kick the door open.  (Assuming its closed but not locked and barricaded)

    "Anybo-bo-bo-..........Who's here?" I yell out.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

Alex quickly looks around for a weapon, a fireaxe if he can find one as he's getting the hang of using them (I figure there's a good chance one feel off the truck as it was thrown around) and charges into the building, ready to dismember whatever is hurting Mary!

    Re: Inconvenient Death

Armed with axes, the two men charge into the church.  Blood marks the pews, and several freshly killed bodies lie scattered about the room.  Nothing moves and there is no sound other than the pounding of rain on the stained-glass windows and the low rumble of thunder.  Then, another muffled scream from down the hall!

Running to the rescue, Abe and Alex come upon two zombies, one in a priest's smock and the other in a lab coat, clawing their way through a thin wooden door.  Through a gap they can see Mary and the little girl that she clutches to her.  Again she screams in terror!

    Abe

A lab coat is, was my usual work uniform and something about seeing a zombie in the coat snaps something inside me.  Up to now I was just fighting zombies but something about this zombie makes it personal.  Gritting my teeth and using the the controlled 2 hand grip I slice and dice the lab coat's head till there is nothing left but a bloody stump barely protruding above the coat collar.  Then spinning in a crouch I look towards the front door and the interior of the church to make sure nothing is trying to flank us.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

OOCCrap!  I had a nice little post going and then my browser asploded and I lost it all.  Grr!

Both men charge forward, almost in unison, bringing their axes down upon the unsuspecting zombies' skulls.  In a frenzy of gore, their axe-falls bring the undead to the ground, their heads unrecognizable messes.

Inside the room, Mary and the little girl sob with relief from their terror, Mary's only intelligible word being "Alex".

Meanwhile, Abe scans the hall behind them for further dangers, but finds the church once again silent but for the tears of the innocent and the low roar of the storm.  However, looking down, Abe sees a thin leather-bound book in the pocket of the zombie's lab coat.  Partially visible on the cover, in gold foil, is the word "-ience".

    Re: Inconvenient Death

My face feels numb as if I had taken a dozen shots of novocaine as I stare at the book.  Can this zombie have had an answer to what is going on?  I know its a stupid thought, it might just be a diary of some love prone 16 year old girl that this Zombie stole the book from but I have a gut feeling, one different from the mind numbing ball of ice that terror gifts you with.  I slowly sink to my knees and almost fearfully grab the book by a corner and pull it out of the pocket and look intently at the cover.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

Abe pulls out the book from the zombie's pocket, slowly revealing the full text of the title, "Aperture Science Research Log".  From the stains along the page-side of the book, it looks like the books was bloodied at some point.

OOCNot sure what happened here. Posted last night and it was there, this morning it wasn't so here goes again. Yeah you are a horrible person raising my hopes up lilke that. Exactly what I would do as a DM but then I really am a horrible person.
    Abe

With trembling fingers Abe carefully grabs the book by a corner and snatches it out of the pocket.  The titel means nothing to him.  Opening the book and scaning the pages it still means nothing to him.  Disgusted he tosses it onto the body.  Wiping my blade off on the lab coat I look around the church again then go outside to check on any activity nearby and to check on Dave.  The trucks engine idling away is reassuring.  Sure is a whole lot of truck to be handling compared to the Landrovers and jeeps I am accustomed to.

OOCAw, come on.  I wouldn't do you like that...Ethan Wink

Alex rushes to Mary, who grabs him tightly, crying into his shoulder.  "They're dead.  They're all dead!", she says over and over, her voice muffled in Alex's jacket.  Alex looks around to make certain the room is safe as the three remain huddled for several minutes, comforting one another.  Soon, the little girl pulls away and looks about the room as Mary continues to cry.  She steps toward the door, and before Alex can warn her to come back for her own safety, she turns to him and, pointing to the small book lying open on the floor, says quietly, "This book says they come from worms..."
