    Inconvenient Death

OOCThis is the beginning of the Story Engine "zombie game".

Quick-Stop Convenience Store, Sometime before dawn:

Inside: Scared, dirty, tired people.  Men and women.  A young girl.  An injured man.

Outside:  Shambling, moaning monstrosities.  People at one point, but not now, and certainly in no condition to be milling about the pre-dawn, winter street.  Sometimes one of them will notice movement behind the iron grate of the Quick-Stop, and charge with sudden, feral speed to batter itself uselessly against the plexiglass and steel.

Days ago, the screaming and the shooting and the sirens stopped.  Now there's only the moaning, and somewhere in the distance, the faint annoyance of a car alarm.  Across the street, the glowing sign of Karnowicz's auto shop flickers its lonely greeting into the darkness.

The survivors suddenly awaken to the sound of a roaring engine, the squeal of tires and the echoing "crump" of impact.  Seconds later, the street, the sign and the Quick-Stop are dropped into complete darkness!

    OOC
You are all in the Quick-Stop and the lights (and heat) have just gone out.  What now?

Hal stands by the group with a mop in his hands. As the lights go out, he sighs, almost as if he expected it.
Well, that confirms it. We can't stay here for much longer.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

"Daddy", the little girl says as she peers  between the bars of the store, "There's a lady in that truck!  I can see her!"

"Come away from the window, honey", her father says as he pulls her back, "It's dangerous".

Outside, the "zombies" flail at the wrecked rental truck, their violence an insane dance in the strobing light of sparking, downed power-lines.  The terror of the woman trapped inside is visible in flashes, but her screams are lost behind the frantic moaning of the dead.

    OOCAnybody else still playing?

OOCOOC: I"m here, but my net acess has been down and now I'm helping several family members pack for a trip to PA and preping for a job interview. Additionally I've been helping with Liviing Greyhawk ARs for mods and folding letters and bleh.
I'll try and post after the choas tommorow afternoon.

How many zombies can I see around the truck? I also look for a back exit, stairs or other such natural defences and vulnerabilities.

OOCGlad you could make it, Nova.  Good luck with all of that Real Life you've got, there. Ethan Smile

You all know that there's a back door leading to an alley (where zombies have been sighted), a ladder in the alley leading to the roof, a walk-in freezer in the back of the store, and some kind of basement storage.  The clerk has a shotgun with 5 shells left, but he won't part with it.  There are also two flashlights.

Alexander Pope peers into the darkness outside, rubbing his stiff back.  The intermittent light from the sparks reveals maybe 15 to 20 zombies swarming the vehicle, but it's difficult to count under the circumstances.  Then he catches a glimpse of the panicked woman in the truck's cab and is struck by a wave of recognition!
OOCWhat's Alexander's girlfriend's name, because it's totally her out there.

    Abe

I have been standing in front of the cooler trying to find the best buy because I needed to make my money last.  I needed ready to eat foods because I had no place to cook it and I was paying no attention at all to what was going on around me.  A loud noise and then the lights went out.  My first instinct was to go to the door and try to administer aid to whoever may have been hurt.  I was even more confused to see a few people standing up front looking out onto the street bu nobody seemed to be making an effort to go outside.  I hesitate at the end of the row waiting for somebody to explain what is going on.

OOC to Old GrumpHey, sorry if I wasn't more clear.  You (and the others) have been trapped here for days, maybe more than a week.  You know that there are "zombies" (whatever that means) out there and that they are dangerous.  Again, sorry if I wasn't clear.  Also, glad to have you aboard!

    Re: Inconvenient Death

    OOCHer name is Mary Byron....

I'm assuming we know a little bit about the zombies if we've been surronded for days, if there slow or I don't know then:

Alex is going to grab Jame and yell "I'll lure them away, you get her out!", then head to the door. He then runs at the zombies screaming until he gets there attention, then attempts to lead the around the truck stop, hoping he can out run them on the straightaway along the backside and get in the side entrace before they can catch up with him.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

Alex yanks back the grate despite the shocked protest of the people around him and runs out into the street shouting and waving his arms.  Within seconds, the pack of zombies around the truck are tearing after him with terrifying speed, howling and snarling and leaving the truck open for a rescue!
OOCOk, the goal here is to rescue Mary from the truck (if you want to).  Alex (Nova) is luring the zombies away.  What is everyone else doing?  This is dangerous and there is a chance for injury.

I grab a pushbroom, the closest thing to a weapon I can find and runs out following but veers away in an effort to split the Zombies up.  30 yards from the truck I wave the broom in the air, jump up and down and scream in a voice which betrays my real fear.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

OOCHmm.  Looks like it's just you two guys.

Ok, so here's how this works.  You guys aren't the most "physical" of characters, so you've got two dice between you to try to get 4 successes.  (1,3 and 5 are successes.  1s earn an extra die roll.)  So it's possible, but it doesn't look good.  If you can reasonably bring your skills into play, that can turn some of those dice into automatic successes.  If you describe how one of your traits (like "Intelligent" or "Average Intelligence but Very Detail Oriented") comes into play, you can "use it up" to gain an extra die.  You can use more than one trait for extra dice, but you can't use those traits for extra dice again for the rest of the story.

So, do you try to use one of your skills or any of your traits to try to succeed before I roll the dice?

Several of the zombies that didn't immediately chase after Alex instead turn their attention toward Abe.  They lunge toward him violently, kicking up loose asphalt in the darkness as they charge, howling mindlessly.

The woman in the car is now free to run to safety, but in her shock she just stares into the darkness, screaming.  Somebody in the store waves a flashlight at her, and calls for her to run, but for the moment she doesn't seem to understand.

OOCI'm here. Sorry, I went to Origins. I just got back.
    "What the-HEY GET BACK HERE!"

Hal follows "Slim" and "None" as they rush out. As he sees Abe is about to get mobbed, he rushes forward, growling like a mad dog and swinging his mop at the zombie head.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

This is where my ignorance of this type of game comes in.  Do I use the "insert dice" drop down to pick and roll a die or are you doing it and if I do it which die do I use, this aint D&D thats for sure.  If you do it my attempted action/s will be as follows. I won't be adding anything extra yet till I learn more about what we are doing.

    Abe

Holding on tightly to the handle of the broom I swing it like a pick, a tool I am familiar with but pick handles are usually a more convenient length.  I come down with the end of the broom's head onto the shoulder of the nearest Zombie retreat 5' and repeat as often as I can while I am still on my feet.  The high pitched ululation you hear is a scream coming from me.  Something I picked up in the mountains of New Mexico on a dig.  One of our laborers came face to face with a mountain lion and it must have worked because the lion left her alone.  I didn't know what else to do so it came out sort of automatically.
