I've been including a lot of Cthulhu stuff lately in the comic, and some people don't have any exposure to it. With that idea I'm going to include some links or ideas to get exposure.
A good movie is Hellboy, the idea of "ancient ones" or whatever waiting to be let back into Earth is a pretty common one in Lovecraft inspired works.
A good summary is over at wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu_Mythos which can give you a good overview.

Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos
Tales of the Lovecraft Mythos
I just read Tales of the Lovecraft Mythos last week and found it pretty good. :)
Now there are current multiple storylines in Dndorks, one in character and one out of character. The IC storyline is a simple adventure, the only way it relates to the OOC storyline is the fact that in the Dndorks universe Cthulhu is stirring from his long sleep and everyone is getting more interested in Lovecraft storylines as a result.
The OOC storyline is a bit more complicated, the cultists are out in force, encouraging everyone to turn to Cthulhu as he wakes up, while Dexter has encountered some sort of carnivorous intelligent caterpillar and has begun to worship them with the hope they'll help him take out his revenge on jocks the world over. Meanwhile the heroes of the story play D&D, though Ethan is doing what he can to waste M.U.N.C.H.K.I.N.G.'s time so they don't bring about the end of the world as they've taken the bait from the cultists hook, line, and anchor.
