Never See the Light of Day [4e] - The Introduction
Never See the Light of Day
A 4e Eberron Campaign
Each of you have done minor tasks for Sairya d'Deneith, Sentinal Marshal of House Deneith. Occasionally you have worked together, in groups of two or three, with Ulgfar always working with Mbertar. Primarily your tasks have involved simple guard jobs, the public face for House Deneith in jobs that require soldiers or bodyguards, but not sensitive enough to require actual members with the Mark of Sentinel. Today you have been brought together for a special mission.
Three hours have passed and there has been no sign of Sairya, her loyal servant Urth, a warforged bodyguard and confidant laced with adamantine studs, has assured you that Sairya was busy but on her way, and ordered whatever any of party wishes to eat or drink within reason (large reason, but reason none the less) from her host of servants who seem to flock around her mansion attending to every little detail two or three times.
And so you spend your afternoon, lounging in her floating mansion high in the skyway, the highest section of the city. Eventually you find yourselves seeing something none of you have seen in quite a while, an actual sunset, as the sun descends into the ocean, and more stunning than you've ever seen even out of the city, a breathtaking sight from her balcony thousands of feet in the sky.
" A breathtaking sight", a voice interrupts, a voice you recognize as the soft but commanding tones of Sairya, Sentinal Marshal and bearer of a Siberys Mark of the Sentinal, nearly every inch of skin covered by the swirling blue mark of House Deneith, " wouldn't you agree?"
Sairya waits until the sun finishes descending past the horizon, then asks you all into her study, a lavishly decorated room filled with comfortable chairs and couches arranged loosely in front of her oak desk. "I hope you managed to entertain yourselves while I was busy, I have high hopes for your division , all of you are stars just beginning to rise in the sky of House Deneith. Most of you know each other, if only briefly, those who don't can introduce yourselves to each other later, while you're preparing. While you were here, I was busy requesting the final items for the mission I think you would be perfect for."
Urth chooses that moment to open the door, his footsteps thudding loudly as he strides over to the desk, managing to bump into quite a few bits of furniture, which, for the most part, he slides out of his way with no sign of effort. " The package has arrived by House Vadalis gargoyle, my lady", the large metal behemoth says as he holds out a leather bound satchel to Sairya. He then promptly strides out, closing the door behind him.
" Excellent!", she says as she quickly unbuckles the satchel and pulls out a small pink gemstone hanging from a silver chain.
Mbertar notices that the satchel has bits of dried blood on it, as if a previous bearer didn't fair so well. She also notices that the gemstone seems to hang funny, as if it were being pulled in a direction other than quite down.
" We have lost an heir to House Deneith, a young woman who has already shown a Mark", she continues, " There are some who question the need for a team such as yourselves when we have vast armies and trained swordsmen, I believe this mission will prove that the House needs a middle ground between soldiers and the Marshalls. Luckily for us, this should be an easy task, as this Eberron dragonshard, if dangled always points towards its companion stone, which she wears. We haven't heard word of ransom yet, she vanished in Platinum Heights in the Upper Wards this morning and as of yet, all attempts to find her have failed. Luckily, I remembered the amulet she wore and retrieved her sister's paired amulet from the countryside. Due to the special nature of this mission, I'll be paying you double your normal fair, 100 gold each, more if exceptional dangers pop up. We don't have time for many questions, but I'll answer what I can, provided you hurry!"
Gah, long intro, sorry everyone. Feel free to ask me about terminology, and you're welcome to interrupt her at some point in the middle if you feel the need, we can just backtrack a bit as necessary.

Re: Never See the Light of Day [4e] - The Introduction
Korihor's eyes flow over the Eberron shard and he feels a part of him
recoil a bit from it. Outwardly he makes no movement of revulsion. He
has had practice around such artifacts before he would let another handle it so it would not offend the power of the deep one within him. His right hand brushes ever so slowly over his chin as he
thinks, questions coming to him as he begins to ponder on how this could have happened to a hieress of this house. After all if she was showing the mark, then wouldn't her combat effectiveness have been improved. Not only that but since when does a martial orginisation like this house let it's high risk targets walk around without layers of security.
"Lord Marshal, was the lady escorted when she was taken?" His voice is formal and soft but projected well so that it is like a swift stream or a river. Rushing over and breaking upon the person like a stone in a current, but flowing on like the water. "Most surely she had at least one person with her of the house?" His red tail flickers a bit betraying a hint of curiosity in his stillness.
"Honor, Temperance, and Courage, these three virtues Remember always."

Re: Never See the Light of Day [4e] - The Introduction
Galadriel had ensure to lean against the wall directly next to the door, so that if some trouble were to rear it's head he could quickly respond and put himself between it and his charge. Though House Deneith had proved to be both trustworthy and secure, you could never be too careful, especially when the life of your charge hung in the balance... it was a testimate to his compusure that he managed to endure the wraforged pushing through with little more than straying his hand to his blade, before relaxing it when he realized that it was no threat.
Looking for more about the room than at the dragon shard, Galadriel none the less had to comment at Korihor's obervation. "If she did have an escort, they must not have been a very good one if they allowed her to come to harm," he commented in a soft but sure voice.

Re: Never See the Light of Day [4e] - The Introduction
When Sairya enters the room Mbertar is sitting quietly in the corner, staring outside and lost in thought.
Throughout the conversation she makes no sound and asks no question. Using her small size and unimpressive look she tries to attract as little attraction as possible.
When all questions are answered she stands, goes up to Sairya, takes the Dragonshard from her hand and puts it into the satchel still lying on the table and closes her hand on it.
At this point it seems as if the weight of the mission added an inch or two to her height.
"I can not speak for no-one but myself," she starts with a clear foreign accent, "but as for me, I will do my best to return this flower to its garden."
Without much more she starts walking outside, passing Galadriel on her way. While passing him she sais in a clear voice "Time is a factor here. We should delay no more."
Once outside she takes another look at the satchel and slides it into an inner pocket.
She stands outside the room to see who follows.

Re: Never See the Light of Day [4e] - The Introduction
The Lord Marshal is quick to answer, " She most definitely had an escort, her father had assigned a pair of trusted guardians, a Valenar swordmaster and a Deneith warden. She should have been safe, however Lauren d'Deneith has a habit of keeping her guardians at arms length in the worst of areas, and in a prestigious shopping area like Platinum Heights she kept them even further. They claim to have been watching her shop from across the square when a throng of people interrupted their vision for but a moment and she was gone. If things go awry with the amulet, you're welcome to speak to them."
Seeing Mbertar get up, Sairya smiles, " Excellent, take this satchel", she stuffs a bag obviously holding coins and a half dozen feather tokens into the bag, " I'm including half up front, 50 gold each, in addition some Cannith feather tokens. For some reason these things often end up with someone getting pushed off a ledge, the feathers will protect you...once"

Re: Never See the Light of Day [4e] - The Introduction
Hearing the Lord Marshal's responce to the question of a escort Ulfgar says "Eye, the group resonsible must have studied Lauren d'Deneith well to know her guardians would be at a distance, else she would have not been taken or the trusted pair surely would have protected her with there very lives". Seeing Mbertar snap out of her deep thoughts and go take the Dragonshard, he stands up. "M'Landy, I feel that my fate is intwined with this girl's as I was present in Trolanport in the Temple when she was blessed by the Light of Onatar. Her bieng so moved by the importance on time with this mission we Must depart Now to ensure the safe return of our lost heiress". Ulfgar makes a polite, but short, bow to Lady Sairya d'Deneith and follows Mbertar out the door.

Standing at the door Mbertar stops for a second, looks back at Sairya and sais: "Incidently, where can we find her guards?"

Re: Never See the Light of Day [4e] - The Introduction
Sairya nods to Mbertar, "As you will, Let us hope it doesn't come to that", and tells you the location of Lauren's father's estate, about an hour out of town by lightning rail and another half hour after that by foot.
From the ledge in Skyway where you all stand, looking at the floating skycoach in front of you gently bob, it makes you more aware than ever of how very high Sharn is.
Looking upon the City of Towers is a bit disconcerting from so high and while up here there is still some remaining signs of daylight, down below the city is like a massive maw of a great creature. The upper levels are only now relying on the magical torches that are spaces evenly across bridges and courtyards, while the lower levels never saw sight of the sun at all.
The driver of the skycoach, a half elf with dark hair and a shrewd look about him, glances between you all and his boat, "Hmm, gonna be a tight fit", there is barely enough room for you all in the skycoach, but you'll manage. "So where to, Platinum Heights?"

"I guess the Gray Draggon Inn is as good a place to start as any. We can stock up in the area and spend the night there, so we can start first thing tomorrow morning. Any objections?"

Re: Never See the Light of Day [4e] - The Introduction
Korihor speaks again with that river like voice of his, neither commanding attention, but flowing into the vacuum of it. "If the trinket is pointing down, I say we follow it for a while and see just how far down we need to go. Once we can level off we can try the local bars and taverns." The Tiefling says calmly. "people aren't going to brag about this hap haphazardly so information won't be forthcoming even in a tavern where tounges are loosed by strong drink." He looks at the two who have gotten up already and stands. "Time is a factor here, remember there hasn't been a ransom demand yet. That is unheard of. If they grabbed her by doing their "homework" then they know how much to ask for and would have had the ransom note ready at the snatch and it woud have arrived within hours of her being grabbed." He walks to the door. "Let's move."
"Honor, Temperance, and Courage, these three virtues Remember always."

Re: Never See the Light of Day [4e] - The Introduction
At the far side of the room, sitting so still he may have been a statue, was Torr, he looked like your everyday human. He had messy dark brown hair, greenish brown eyes, and sported a scruffy beard, the only out of the ordinary feature to him was a grouping of scars that were over his left eye, almost like claw marks...but not quite. He wore worn dark gray leather armor, a tattered black scarf, some sturdy looking gray leather boots, and an old yet new looking black cloak. There was a small pouch on his belt, and a backpack could just barley be seen from benieth the cloak, a mace hung at his side. Torr watched the precidings of the meeting in silence, trying to deside if a ransom would ever actually come, as the rest of his 'group' began to depart, Torr stood up with quietly and raised his hood. As he walked past the desk he picked up the feather charm, placing it carefully into his pouch before continueing out of the office. But, as he got to the door, he stopped, and turned back towards Sairya, "You mentioned that she had shown her dragon mark, am I right to assume it was a Mark of the Sentinal, and, no matter the answer, was her mark made public?" Asked Torr in an indifferent, yet tired voice, "Also...may I inquire to the previous owner of that satchel...Lauren's sister was it? And how the satchel inquestion was attained?"
Don't let the obstacles of today, keep you from seeing tomorrow.- Saint Pumpkin
