Where will 'You' hide from that which gibbers in the dark [Nemesis Horror]

Its 1921, you live in Lion's Head, a small but wealthy city in New England.  Prohibition has brought a Speak Easy as well as its accompanying rise in crime and little else. By itself, the city would be insignificant, withering away as its best and brightest left for brighter shores, but then, living in the shadow of the larger seemingly cursed city of Arkham, its sister city to the North, makes Lion's Head seem like idyllic in comparison.

Most people live believing what they read in the newspaper, learnin school, are told by their parents, is all that is true and right in the world.  When that little girl was found in her room...well dead is almost too kind of a word for it, it was well known that her father was a drunk, only emphasizing how important prophibition is!  And when James the janitor was found in the alley near the wharf, well his skin anyways...it was sad, but the cougar was cought shortly afterward, so the community was ok.  For some people however, they've had a closer brush with something in the dark.  These people have trouble living day to day like everything is fine, at best becoming slightly antisocial, at worst being sent to Arkham to receive treatment in its famous asylum.

Are you one of these people, one of those who have had a touch with the darkness?

I'm looking to have a game with 2-3 people in the Nemesis Horror system.  Jason(artmonkey) has already signed up.  The game is going to have a strong narrative bent, which means I'm going to have to be somewhat strict on the character creation.

All you have to know about the world, is a rough idea of what the 1920s were like in America, watch a period film or something on netflix if you need to. ;)  Gangsters, speak easys, detectives, etc.  In this case you'll actually be in a small New England town, and these towns seem to be a little strange, filled with secrets, and more than a dash of xenophobia.

You'll most likely play some sort of detective, or a diletante who likes to investigate things for the fun of it, or a scholar with an interest in such things, something that makes you have an interest in helping people (even if the interest is only financial) or in exploring mysteries.

You'll be a human, starting with no supernatural powers, which is a little unfair when you think about it, because the monsters, well the monsters have lots of supernatural powers, plus the very sight of them might end up with your character being shipped off to to nuthouse.  In fact your character might not survive the story, and even if your party wins (whatever winning means), chances are, the ending won't be happy.  Its the nature of such things, here in Lion's Head.

Post here if you're interested in joining, describe the kind of character you want to play.

Here are some useful links of information. http://www.nemesis-system.com/ore-horror/index.php  for the Game Setting articles and such.  Here is a link to the rules: http://www.nemesis-system.com/downloads/nemesis/download.html

I'm attaching a rules summary.  Look forward to reading your responses.

Re: Where will 'You' hide from that which gibbers in the dark [Nemesis Horror]

    William Gable

Charged for a murder he claims he didn't commit, William has been on the run for a month. He found his way to Lion's Head purely by chance, and is trying to lose himself in the community by returning to his trade as a general mechanic and repairman. He brought very little of his with him, though he could not bear to leave behind his 1918 Pope L-18 motorbike (which he will tell you all about if you give him half a chance) and a german pistol, one of two trophies sent back by his father during the war.

After his father's death in France in 1917, William took it upon himself to support his family (his only brother being too young to work). He took up an apprenticeship at a local garage, maintaining the few cars that went through and learning the tricks of the engine. By 1920 he had established himself as a trustworthy mechanic and thanks to his father's war pension had been able to save up enough money to buy his own motorcycle, which quickly became his pride and joy.

At this point his story descends to more murky depths, and very few people know about the day he woke up to the police at his door, in fact very few people know any more than his name and that of his bike (Loretta). He tells anyone who wants to know that he's from Chicago, but if you listen to his accent or look up the address he gives you, you'll wonder if he's telling the truth.

Since coming to Lion's Head, he has found that the people mostly keep to themselves, and a surprising amount of machinery breaks down or is mysteriously damaged. More than enough to keep him employed. While he isn't about to throw away his source of income, he would dearly like to know what's going on in this mysterious town.

Born 05/06/1900 (That's the fifth of June, by the way, I should clarify that I'm using the Australian date format)

Re: Where will 'You' hide from that which gibbers in the dark [Nemesis Horror]

Excellent, I think we should close up the members right there, 3 will do for now. :)  I'll post more about the current events soon, then a kickoff thread ina  few days.

In the meantime, I'd like your input on how the characters are involved together.  It seems to me that Rick Spade might have hired Anthony Richardson, Anthony has a lot of experience with things Rick has an obvious interest in.  Also, Rick Spade has the money and resources to hire someone like William Gable and people with mysterious pasts might be of general interest to the wealthy detective known for taking on specifically weird cases, cases others aren't willing to take on.

    A bit of news.

    The Lion's Head Herald

The front page of this small gazette proclaims that there has been a murder in the nearby town of Amber Ridge.  The killer, Thomas Malcom, is from Lion's Head, and there are several interviews with locals who claim to never have suspected the young man from a fine family to have been capable of such a deed.  The wife, Cheryl Malcom, was witness to the event apparently and has been in shock, unable to do much more than cry according to the story.  Thomas Malcom is being held in Amber Ridge pending trial.

There's a good chance I put some work in on Rick's car at some point, could be I overheard him talking about his investigations.

Re: Where will 'You' hide from that which gibbers in the dark [Nemesis Horror]

That sounds good to me, though I'd like to suggest that Anthony served with Williams father. At least fighting in WW1 could explain some of the skills Anthony has.

Anthony has heard of William and seen the picture of him and his family when he was a kid, but can't recognice him as there is time passed since the picture was taken.

Re: Where will 'You' hide from that which gibbers in the dark [Nemesis Horror]

Sorry.  I should be more participatorative.  Yes, absolutely.  Rick would definitely have heard about Anthony's adventures through the papers and his investigations and would likely have contacted him if he was in town.  And who doesn't need a quality mechanic on call?  1920s cars suck.
